catalogue design

Hello all.
Below is the final design of the catalogue that goes to print this week. Its only 99% done, but gives you all a very good idea of what it'll look like. Levene is doing an e-vite this week so you can email that to all your contacts early this coming week.
With any luck I'll have the catalogues to give out at the meeting thursday. I'll let you all know by email the exact dollar difference in cost so you can bring the money then too. Thanks.
Lou.

Meeting with the Powers

OK today Louise and I had a meeting with Stephen and Colleen about the myriad of questions we had about funding and what not.

The responses as were as follows.

Printing of catalogue - they were willing to contribute $350 - meaning the remainder possibly $150 we would cover which equates to roughly $12 each
(we are still awaiting for a quote from the printers)

Press Release - Stephen was on top of that this morning, he punched up  a press release pretty quickly, while we were there, and was  planning to send to the age, art almanac and trouble magazine.

Sponsorship - Stephen also was going to contact his man at Dean's Art about a possible award for the night.

Matt board - Because not all of use are framing work - the school is going to buy a box of matt board and whoever needs matt board can  purchase each sheet which I believe is A0 in size( pretty big) for $10 each.

Frames -  Stephen stated that is was matter of keeping the frames in good condition to be returned to the school as a priority with using them. So to speak School Property and how it's being transported and taken care of. He was iffy about this point and gave no clear answer. On a side note anyone planning to sell work on the night should have their own framing because it promotes false advertising...just a thought.

Hooks - the school is going to provide an additional 50 hooks on top of the 45 from gallery. So 95 in total which equates to almost 8 each.

Van or Truck -  the hiring of  van or truck is possible. Stephen said we could possibly get the library van after hours to transport the work. However he did suggest hiring a ute or van for $60 day as an easy alternative. He suggested one collection point for all the work which would be school. So having the work and framed ready to roll on monday the 21st would be top priority. This would also dictate whether we were able to secure some frames as having one form of transport would ensure the school the frames were looked after.

Space at school - we are more than welcome to use the back room at school ( behind the main studio) however we are unable to stay later than 8 on any given night and we can't obviously be there on the week end. So the Thursday Friday(note friday is usually till 4) and Monday before the show are crucial to getting it all together.

Using simon - no go_ stephen reckons we should be on top of it all in short.

That is everything _whew

Info About 1000 pound and A0 print size

Hey Guys, I got some answers from 1000 pound today about the space.

First off they do opening's from  6-9pm - print crew... on that!
They are open during the week 10 - 6pm and weekends 11-5pm

We  are allowed to use blu-tac however they suggest not to,because the walls are peeling, the best suggestion was to use the provided hooks.

They have 45 hooks and hanging system very similar to the one in b space. I think we need to ask nmit to for more hooks...I'll get on that.

We could also possibly make smaller areas with the moveable walls to make the space more interesting.

The gallery will be manned by their staff, which makes it easy for us.

I asked if we could stay late on the 22nd for set up, they said a staff member has to be there, hopefully I can swindle Toby into being around.

I have also been told for the opening night the space will been opened from the rear entrance( which is behind the moveable walls at the back of the space(this is because of serving alcohol).
The entance is quite large but not as large as the front. It was suggested to make some additional signs to instruct how to get into the space from the back. So we need a couple of signs.

The rear entrance is only for the opening night the rest of the week it will be the front.

As mentioned by Hilde and in the meeting and email the print size is 2378cm high  x 841cm wide (2 A0 prints in length) make the file and send to my email asap the latest is the next meeting on the 3rd.
Don't give it to me, email to me with your name and a0 print in the title of the email,  much easier.

The box group will start printing asap, to get things rolling!

For now

Re: A5 Booklet idea

Hi, I like Hilde's idea. I think it would look good with a screw bolt. I have attached a picture.

a5 booklet

Idea for exhibition booklet. This option should be cheap + we would all get one a5 page.
16 pages including front and back (one page for every artist, front and back page, blurb page and nmit page). Costs would be only for printing, cutting and punching one hole through all of the pages. We would tie a piece of string through the hole ourselves. Or potentially buy little steel rings and thread through.

Re: Brochure/postcards

In regards to Louise's email on postcards/brochures.... Only other suggestion I can think of for now is an A4 colour brochure, double sided, folded in 2 places. eg

AO Illustration - REMINDER

Just a quick note about the AO B&W illustration.

We still dont have the exact dimensions for the illustration, so please all be aware that your designs may need to be altered to fit, so it's probably best not to get your artwork completely finished at this stage.
Hopefully we'll know soon.

RRR Advertising

I just looked into advertising on RRR radio.

I think it's important for us to advertise outside of the art community. Illustrators Australia can notify their members, who are other illustrators. Dropping off flyers at art shops and unis isn't the audience that are likely to be able to afford or require our services??

I thought RRR radio would be good and it's very cheap to advertise on air. It's $30 per 30 second announcement and they have a package which is $300 for 10 ads.

We have $120 left in our account and perhaps we could all chip in for the remainder. It's works out to $15 each.

In case you don't RRR it is a communtiy radio station with12,000 individual subscribers with a weekly audience of 329,000.

Let me know your thoughts...

Minutes - 24th January Meeting (@ Lukes)

Hi All,

The next meeting is Thursday the 10th Feb at 7pm at Lukes. Stick around afterwards to have dinner, a chat,  and pat a cat (your choice of fiesty short haired domestic black or posh, fluffy and possum-like).

Here are some other important dates:

Feb 21 - Have a full colour image for the postcards/invite. The size is approximately A6 but exact dimensions will be given once we here back from the printer. Be warned....any work not given by this date will not be printed!

Feb 28 - Printing resumes

March 14 - Invites to be sent out and taken to artshops, cafes, Uni etc

In regard to the double AO images, once we hear from Hilde about the exact size of the cardboard, Luke and Robin will let us all know the exact size to create the artwork for print. Once we get this info, we will have 7 days to get the piece finished and sent. All the details of what are needed will be provided, so watch this space.

9x5 boards - were supplied by Jackie last night. If u didn't get one, let Jackie know. What was decided was that there will be NO theme for these pieces, but that they should be a personal piece that expresses yourself as an artist (since they will be shown in partnership with your personal artist statement.

Logo - I think is pretty much resolved to work as a "wheel" and also as a "flatter line of text". (sorry, dont know how else to describe it).

The end.. for now,

Lou

End is the Beginning- chloe m

Sorry team for missing this evening meeting, some things with my brother have not been so great lately. Anyway, this is the current state of my A0 installation illustration, I still want to work with the composition of the figure however this is where she stands so far.. not completely done but really just  need to fix up and tidy up.

I have also given thought to the external works away from the installation where I had mentioned at the meeting last saturday at the 1000pound bend, I was interested in working with furniture, I now am considering sticking to several varieties of chairs (yes, I am thinking everyone is reflecting and groaning of their own chairs project in second year) researching now with materials and the method.

Hope this evenings meeting went well..
what can I do for the next meeting?
What else is there to do for the exhibition that I can help out with?

£1000 Bend Floor plan

Luke, Louise, Lorena, Chloe and myself went into £1000 Bend today.

We did some measurements and worked out where the installation will go. I've attached a map and calculated how much space we get each, roughly.

We each have 2.5 metres approximately of wall space.

Let me know if you have any questions.

January 13 - Meeting Minutes

Meeting was held at uni with Colleen and Stephen, and nearly everyone was there which was great.

EXHIBTION DATES
Luke has confirmed the dates of the exhibition....

Set up and installation is on Tuesday 22 March

Opening night is Friday 25th March

The exhibition is only open for 1 week, but at this stage I'm not sure if we'll be packing up on the Monday or Tuesday of the following week.

Absolutely everyone MUST be there on the 22nd to set up. Sorry but no excuses.

OPENING SPEAKER
We are hopefully getting Dave O'Neil to open the show, but Stephen will be following this up.

INSTALLATION
For the instalation, each persons image will be a B&W print, basically the size of 2 x A0 (portrait) sheet joined together to form one image, so it will be long and skinny. Luke or Robin will let us know the exact size real soon, with a template to be supplied by  Luke.

We are also going to seek sponsorship from "Makedo" clips so that we can put the installation together, but it seems likely that NMIT willl pay for them if this cant happen, as they'll be able to use them for other purposes in the future.

Colleen is also going to try to get sponsorship from Deans Art, Computers Now, and who ever we use as our printers.

INDUSTRY SHOW
Stephen reiterated that this is an "industry show" not a "graduate show". He read a media release blurb that he and Colleen will use on the NMIT website that speaks of what the show is, and also promotes the Illustration course. It will officially be referred to annually as the "NMIT Bach of Illustration Industry Show".

LOGO
Levine has designed a great little logo of a guinea pig running in a revolving wheel. A few suggestions were made before she goes into final artwork, but it looks like a "rubber stamp" image, with hand drawn type of 'the end is the beginning' incorporated into the outline of the wheel (see previous post for an early rough).
The logo will be used on the website and catalogue.
Thanks Levine!

How to make £
To make a pound symbol (£) on your keyboard, it's Option 3.

Catalogue Design
Any thoughts, please bring to the table. Me and Luke (and possibly others) will be meeting with Stephen at the NMIT Preston printers to get ideas on options and costs to better inform us on which direction is both budget conscious and sexy.

WEBSITE
We will be making a webpage (thru Blogger) that will have links to our individual websites, and will contain select images of the works in the show. This will act in relation to the invite, for further info on the show and the participating artists.
One thought is that we do a really simple page in the lead up to the show, and then once it opens, then add all the images that are in the show, so that it isn't a spoiler before the fact, but will be a great catalogue of the exhibition that we can keep online for the rest of time.

Some, as yet unspecified person will need to design/do this.

NEXT MEETING
is at Lukes House. We have decided to do an after hours time so hopefully no one works at this time. (Bring a couple of dollars and we can maybe get a few pizzas for dinner.)
The date is January 24 at 7pm. Contact Luke via email for address.
As we will need to put out media releases, and compile the catalogue, we will need a colour image from everyone that you are really happy with to promote yourself. It may be that we can update the image if u end up doing a picture you like better, but we can't guaratee that time will allow for this to be possible.

We will also be meeting at the Gallery tday to work out how much space we will all have, and to see how the installation should go. No drama's if u cant make it. 2pm if u can!

Love you and leave you,
Louise

Just wanted to show you this because it's cute. In one of my classes we made stickers, a little girl called Paige (about 7yo) drew this guniea pig.

End is the beginning logo

Hey everyone.. quite nervous about putting this up cos its very rough but so far what do you think of the layout and idea? I tot of having the wheel look like it was painted instead of something clean cos i think most of our styles are a bit more traditional and hand drawn and we want to differentiate ourselves from graphic designers.

The font is just something I did by hand.. totally not final but thats the idea of the 'T' connecting with the wheel. The guinea pig I want to make bigger and push up a little more to occupy the space.. but like i said i don't have photoshop now so.. Prob can see this working both as a traditional looking piece and also vectorised. Also can see the circular bit with the words, animated and moving round and round and our little guinea pig's legs moving as well... would look cute as button badges? Please critique!

oh! and i'm not finished with the design of the guinea pig.. i think he looks too much like a fat mouse now.. but I like the simplicity of the shape and the teeny legs.. I'll try one slightly furrier and white with a patch on one eye..

AO Illustration

Hi, Here's my idea. I havent yet worked out the final design, but the idea is about the repetative nature of theatre both in performance and costume design.
For a 3D element, i think i will be making some legs that kick out from the construction, and maybe some feathers in her hair.
Louise

AO Illustration

Hi everyone,

This is my illustration for our house installation. I haven't come up with any ideas for what sort of objects could be sticking out from the illustration (as discussed in last meeting), so if any of you have any ideas please comment and let me know!

OTHER POINTS:

MEETINGS:

The next meeting is on January 13th at 10 am at Fairfield, and will be with Stephen and possibly Colleen. Bring a small scale pic of your B&W image to the meeting (see "installation").
I will not go on about turning up other than to say this....

•Bring a diary to all meetings.

•Take notes. I will take minutes but it is on each individual to take notes for themselves on key points.

•PLEASE BE ON TIME!! Many people have to go to work, so we need to get started at the time specified. Also, being constantly interrupted, and having to go over points already discussed is counterproductive. We all know things can happen like trains running late so I'm not being a hardass, just professional.

INSTALLATION:

As you all probably know, we are doing a group piece which will be in the form of a building-like structure. The theme is ""The end is the Beginning" for this piece (and the 9x5 "doors" - see below).
Each artist will do a B&W image on one panel, and then on the other side will be a mish-mash collage using repeated elements of these images, combined to form a new work.
Therefore, what we require off everyone is an image! Hilde will supply dimensions, but please start drawing ideas for it now. Deadline for the completed B&W image from evertyone is strictly Jan 29 to allow for printing and putting it together.

We were discussing having a limited palette of colors to use in the catalogue, logo etc, and then keep these colours to do some watercolour, ink or collage applications on the "house".
Go crazy with your ideas. We showed each other our designes at the meeting and had a really great brainstorming session, where i think most of us walked away with ideas of how we could really bring these ideas to 'life'.
Another thing we thought could work well is if everyone added some kind of 3D element to their piece, no matter how big or small. For example, Levene plans on putting some suspended paper cranes hanging from her piece.
Could everyone that has done their rough please post it to get this thing rolling. It doesn't need to be a final work or finished rough, a thumbnail expressing the idea is fine and good.

CATALOGUE:

For the catalogue, we will be needing an image, sepereate to the above mentioned piece, which will be used in the catalague. Make it be a winner, as this will be the one image people will walk away with.
This image needs to be emailed to Robin by Jan 29 latest.

9 X 5 DOOR:

The door is a symbol of the show. As Jim Morrison said (something like) "there is everything here, and there is everything beyong here, and in between are the doors".
The moral of the story is, everyone is to do a piece on a 9x5inch piece of wood, with this theme in mind.
Wood will be supplied to all that dont have one at a later date.

LOGO:
we have decided to have an image of a guineapig running in a wheel as an image to use for the logo.
The reasons are metaphorical, so start pondering if u dont get it.

Thanks all.
Hope u feel inspired to get started.
Louise.

Request

Hi Eveyone.
I will be writing the minutes of the last meeting which i will post later today. I do have one request though that we change the background of the blog to white. Firstly the black hurts my eyes, and also when we start posting images of our prints the work will not be affected by its surrounds.
Thanks,
Louise x

Plastic clips for Cardboard structure.

As discussed on the 9th of December we have discovered that using plastic clips can bought to affix our large cardboard structure together securely and will allow us to bypass the use of tape. Watch the video on the opening page to get the idea.
